India ranks 60th most “innovative country” on the Global Innovation Index (‘GII’) 2017 out of 127 countries. India has jumped up by 6 ranks, in 2016 Indian was on the 66th rank. India has also launched “Smart India Hackathon” and “Smart India Hardware Hackathon” to improve the innovative abilities of the students in the Higher Education Institutions. Ministry of Human Resource Development states that in 2017 Smart India Hackathon received huge response.
Government has also launched “India Innovation Index” which would rank Indian states on Innovations through country’s first online innovation index portal that would capture data on innovation from all Indian states and regularly update it in real time.
Govt. has taken initiative to promote research parks (RPs) and technology business incubators (TBIs) which would nurture and promote the innovative ideas till they become commercial ventures. In addition, Govt. has also launched projects for promoting research and innovation like the IMPRINT and Uchhatar Avishkar Yojana (UAY) which focuses on the scientific community.
Lastly, The Start Up India initiative of the Government has also put in place a mechanism for identifying and incubating the innovative ideas.
